Reducing Costs and Emissions

The GSEG Power Plant (CCPP) at Surat is one of the most efficient power plants in the country. Due to the facility's high efficiency and the inherently clean quality of natural gas, the facility ensures very low emissions. All major constituents of the plant's exhaust are well below the stipulated Significant Impact Levels. Resulting in low cost of the energy. Combined-cycle combustion turbines are the preferred option for new generating stations throughout the country, and closer home in Gujarat. Plant Consumption of water, currently being sourced from upstream of River Tapi, is reduced by the advanced air cooled condenser technology, to less than that consumed by similar power plants.

Natural Gas - Rationale

In Gujarat, and India, one of the fastest growing economies in the world, a plentiful and cheap supply of indigenous coal is often the primary source of energy. Growing population, industry and economy are extracting a huge toll on the country's resources, not to mention the environment considerations. While our country depends on imports of major fuel supplies, the rapid pace of liberalisation and State & private sector efforts have pointed to reliably confirmed and very substantial gas reserves across various exploration regions in India, like Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra etc. And it is being increasingly recognised that gas has the potential to meet growing energy requirements in India, providing a more efficient and economic fuel while dramatically reducing the impacts on environment and human health. Currently, the world over, there is a race to explore and exploit this natural fuel for energy needs spanning industry, power, transport and domestic & commercial sectors. A highly appreciable global endeavour to find and leverage alternative and renewable energy sources, and develop sustainable environment activities.

GSPC Group recognises that in the near term Gas will become the principal fuel for industry, transport and power, paving the way for an exciting hydrocarbon economy future.

Presently…

Cleaner-burning natural gas is the fuel of choice for today's newest electricity generating plants. Switching from coal to gas as the primary fuel for generating electricity can result in a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions per unit of electricity generated. This and the greater efficiency of gas combustion technology mean that energy from gas produces markedly less air pollutants than the equivalent of coal combustion. Power from large centralised facilities is being complemented by distributed power in the form of smaller scale facilities to meet local demand for electricity. Reinforcing GSEG and GSPC Group commitment to Natural Gas industry growth.

Natural Gas - Benefits

Increasingly, natural gas is being used in combination with other fuels to improve the environmental performance and decrease pollution. Natural gas is a colourless, odourless cleaner- burning fuel in direct contrast to other fossil fuels known to man. Natural gas is produced, sometimes along with oil, by drilling into the Earth's crust where pockets of natural gas were trapped hundreds of millions of years ago. Once the gas is brought to the surface, it is refined to remove impurities, such as water, other gases and sand. Then it is transmitted through large pipelines that span the continent.
